The Atlantic Lobster and Dolphins in Accra, a whites-only restaurant in Ghana was closed down by the government a few days ago. The restaurant was closed down after breaching the country’s tourism laws and making racists comments on Ghanaians.
A lady of Ghanaian origin is said to have reported the restaurant after she visited it with her Spanish friend, only to be turned back on the basis of her race. The owners of the restaurant informed her that only whites were allowed to register and become members of the club.
Elizabeth Okoror was shocked by this, blowing an alarm on the restaurant through social networks.
Her persistence to resist this kind of discrimination pushed the government to act on the matter. Ghana’s Deputy Tourism Minister Agyenim Boateng visited the premises, later telling Ghanaian media that the restaurant had been shut down.
However, the Prime Minister claimed that the reason for closure was not on basis of racial discrimination but on failure of the company to adhere to legislative instrument. He said that the owner had also confirmed the discrimination comments on Elizabeth Okoro, but described them as ‘only a joke’.
