Home Networking & Technology

Home networking is growing rapidly. This is largely due to the ever increasing benefits of having a home network and the ease of use created by manufactures.  One can now purchase a wireless router and seamlessly connect it to their existing internet connection. Home networking opens you up to a world of possibilities.
For starters multiple computers are able to access the internet simultaneously with no extra charge from your internet service provider. In addition all the computers in your home can share resources such as your printer or external hard drives.

Media Centers
What good is a 10,000 song mp3 collection if you can only play it on you computer? Most home networking users fail to take advantage of the resources they already have mostly because they don’t understand how to make it work. With the emergence of media centers it is now easier than ever to play music and videos from you PC to your living room TV and speakers. A media center setup box lets you sit in your living room and browse content such as pictures, music and videos stored on any computer in your house. In the case of music you can then select what to play and where to play it to. So if you have already invested in a good sound system then you won’t have to play your mp3s on your small PC speakers anymore. If you own a digital camera then you probably have hundreds of photos saved on your computer. Rather than have people crowd over a small computer screen to view the photos, you can now use your remote control to browse the photos on the 48” plasma TV your got for Christmas. With some appropriate mp3 playing in the background of course but that’s a subject for another day.

Slingbox
DVRs have made it possible to record our favorite TV shows for later viewing. But most DVRs fill up quick and don’t give you the option to upgrade your storage capacity. Video card manufactures have made it easier to record your TV shows to your PC for later viewing. The advantage here been that your recording capacity is only limited to your hard drive space available. Although some may argue that the picture quality is a little lower, it is getting better by the day.
All this recording capabilities are good but what happens if you forget to record Oprah at 5pm? In comes the slingbox. A slingbox connects to your home router and provides you access to your DVR or TV from the internet. You can login from anywhere in the world to watch your TV or set your DVR recording. So rather than leave work early and risk loosing your job over a TV show, all you have to do is remotely connect to your slingbox from a website and set your DVR to begin recording at a specific time. You can also watch your home TV (cbs46) while vacationing in a different time zone e.g. Kenya. See www.slingmedia.com for more information.
