Sunday 1-6-08 (Teddy Njoroge Kamau, PhD, reporting for KEN from Nairobi, Kenya)
A pastor friend of mine called to inquire whether I had heard the news about Kenyan refugees. “Do you know that Africa Inland Church Maai Mahiu is hosting refugees from Narok District,” he said on the phone with great concern. I had not heard so he narrated the story. The community in Narok had sworn that when Raila Odinga got elected they would evict the Kikuyu’s from Narok District.
This district that had seen violence before and the government had cracked down on Ole Ntimama the area MP, who had incited those in Maasailand to destroy every Kikuyu home. The government had since restored peace in this area, but apparently deep in their hearts many had believed that Ntimama was right. When he was elected back as the area MP in the recent elections, people in that area began to rally calling for a mass action against the Kikuyus in the district. Kikuyu businessmen from surrounding areas had unwaringly offered free transportation for many people who believed that Ntimama, a Raila supporter had vowed to clean house. Now those Kikuyus from Narok have had to evacuate.
This morning (Sunday), I heard drums from a Pentecostal Church as people were on the way to the church. As I passed near another church, I heard the congregation singing the hymn, “Nothing but the Blood.” In the meantime, a couple friends of mine stopped me to say hello. “My family just run away from Rondiani in Nakuru District.”
She said there was a group of families had gone to a local police station to look for government help and food after they were chased out of their homes. “Do you know what some of the police officers were saying to them?” she asked in a disgusted voice. Before I could answer, she told me: “They said, why don’t you people eat Kibaki now that you elected him?”
Calm may have returned to the cities, but in the homes of those who live in mixed tribal areas, the smoke still rises. No wonder the worshippers I heard singing in the church were reminding themselves that the heart of man can only be healed by the blood of Jesus.

01-06-2008 23:17, , Guest Hi, They say that politics is the art of possibilities. I am a Kikuyu who have, until today, always believed that Raila is the right man to bring the much needed change in Kenya. But this belief evaporated today when a friend forwarded a "confidential" memo from ODM outlining anti-Kikuyu propaganda as a strategy to galvanize other ethnic groups against one common enemy. It seems Kenya's current ethnic tension was well calculated and rehearsed. Please let us continue to praying. God Bless Kenya Kinyua. Atlanta, GA. » Reply to this comment... |
