O
ver the last few months Kenya’s citizens have questioned everything—from what they read in the papers, to what the next day holds.  Kenyans have found themselves in a ‘doubting zone,’ and as a result they have lost their cool with fellow countrymen to the extreme point of sending thousands to their graves and displacing thousands more.  But what is amazing is that Kenyans and friends of Kenyans have faced it all with a shot of empathy and a rush of reaching out to touch others who were affected by the violence; bracing their nerves; managing their anger, and going on to live and let live another day.  This month we’re reminding our readers, that it is possible to face the unspeakable and somehow put one foot in front of the other until you manage to find your way home again.

After months of heated words and worsening actions among our fellow countrymen, H.E President Mwai Kibaki and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga finally helped bury sharpened pangas by agreeing to a power-sharing government.  If nothing else, the decision to power share should at the least help Kenya find its way forward toward stability once again, reclaiming its former reputation as an island and beacon of peace in East and Central Africa.  At least that’s what most people expect!  Notice I said most people, because Dr. Teddy Njoroge (PhD) critically analyzes the recent events in Kenya.  As you browse through this site, read on and find out why among numerous other questions he is asking about mainstream media’s interpretation of recent events:  “Has Kenya emerged from a possible civil war?” and “Have Kenyans postponed an inevitable civil war for a future involving more fatalities?”  You see, it is well within his rights to ask these questions, as the media i.e., CNN, NBC, ABC, have reported that Kenya has gone the way of other African countries…tribal war, civil war!  But he also questions the media hype, noting that even the reporters have to pay their bills…right?

I
n the reach-out-and-touch mode that embraces the spirit of peace and recognition of our oneness, Kenyans across the board have continued to solicit prayers for immediate stability.  They have also come together to mobilize funds and material goods to be channeled through the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) to support the ongoing humanitarian relief efforts--what I like to call a way forward in hard times.  We (KEN Team) have caught up with the United Kenyans of Chicago (UKC), Kenyan Society in Houston (KENSHO), and Kenyan Action Group (KAG).  These are just but a few organizations that have been set up to aid families of those who may have been affected, either directly or indirectly by the post elections.  Even our own Milele’s Christian Mungai and others teamed up with Partners for Care, Glory Outreach Assembly in Kenya where they visited 11 camps in Maai Mahiu, Naivasha, and Burnt Forest PCEA Church Nakuru.

Also in this finding our way-forward tone, Kenyans on a real-time ‘live’ show on FM 89.3 in Atlanta have decided to talk it out on air!  The idea is to discuss issues affecting Kenya especially the post-election saga, and what Kenyans in the Diaspora can do about it, if anything at all.

Our seasoned Layman columnist, John Waireri, also seems to have been bitten by the ‘way-forward’ bug. In Part 2 of his “GPS to Financial Freedom,” he continues to unveil a valuable navigational structure for achieving financial freedom, as opposed to the popular media-proclaimed opinion of, “Spend! S.p.e.n.d! Spend! You deserve it!”   If his piece doesn’t leave you spendthrift-free, it will at least leave you asking yourself,  “How do I multiply the little $$ dinero $$ that I have?”

Moving right along in our way-forward momentum, is a piece on another true son of Kenya—a real cause for hope and national pride, and a model of encouragement for other children of African immigrants, who is embraced by Kenyans across the board—Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama.  We take a look at what seems to be the one of the tightest pre-election races of all time in America.  KEN wishes you all the best Sen. Obama!

And speaking of races, in a rare but welcome mix of poetry slam and rock music, 10 of the hottest poets you’ve ever heard from around the United States, recently battled it out in Atlanta!  Read on and find out who walked away $1,000 richer after this electrifying entertainment and word boxing event.

No doubts—just the facts—and some astute questions and Kenyan opinions from … your KEN team!

Have a great month!

KEN Editor in Chief!
