Those objecting to the birth of Grand Opposition Coalition are not exhibiting lack of respect for democracy and free society, but are also un unequivocal terms showing undisputable evidence of lack respect for themselves. As Winston Churchill realized, showing respect comes not from weakness and insecurity but rather from strength and confidence, and respect for the other flows directly from respect for self. Respect is an expression of yourself and your values.
Hon. Raila Odinga, the Kenyan Premier has recently demonstrated the fear that soon or later he might become totally irrelevant in Kenyan politics by asking the MPs aligned to the grand coalition opposition to shelve the idea or resign from parliament and seek fresh mandate. Even a caveman can see the palpable double standards of the likes of Raila Odinga. Raila Odinga was the first to impair the integrity of multiparty democracy, not once. He was the first one to cross the floor in the name of power sharing, which through the back door ushered in a quasi coalition government that has caused financial distress to the already stressed budgetary resources.
The MPs behind the grand coalition opposition stated that they respected Raila's view demanding that they resign, but insisted that it would not be necessary because they were not moving from one party to another. Further, it is not within his docket to order us. We are only accountable to the people who voted for us, not Raila or Kibaki or Kalonzo or any minister," said Ruto, adding that some ministers and their assistants had endorsed their move. The defiant MPs said there was no going back and hit out at Raila, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Foreign Affairs minister, Mr Moses Wetangula, for what they termed "dictatorial and draconian" measures while handling internal dissent.
The MPs accused Raila, Kalonzo and some Cabinet ministers of personalising the matter. However, it is important to underscore the fact that Raila and Kalonzo are the two individuals that set the stage for the post election violence. Kalonzo should have supported Raila or Kibaki from the word go and there could been a clear winner of the presidential general election. To the contrary, the same dudes that were throwing jabs at each other are now in the grand coalition government. What an evidence gross deficiency of political morals, convictions and values. This is the very reason; Kenyans should demand the life of the 10th house be cut by three years.
The good news is that some leaders have some semblance of sanity and are willing to stand up be counted as the peoples' watchmen. The MPs who are rooting for the Grand Coalition Opposition should be applauded for the efforts to safeguard the remaining features of a democratic and free society. We would like to recognize the commitment of the Speaker Kenneth Marendes for declaring his intentions to separate the legislative process from the manipulations of the executive. Those crying foe about the imminent birth of grand coalition opposition are by to say the least, freaked by the simple fact that they could become irrelevant come 2012.
However, despite the call by Raila Odinga to kill the birth of the grand coalition opposition, the debate on the formation of a Grand Opposition gained momentum, with several ODM backbenchers behind the initiative vowing to defy their party leader, Prime Minister Raila Odinga's call that they shelve the move (http://216.180.252.4/archives/index.php?mnu=details&id=1143986511&catid). These MPs are exhibiting commitment to respect for democracy as opposed to hanging in the balance of bootlicking and sycophancy. There is no way the current grand coalition government should be allowed to have full term life. In other words, Kenyans should seek ways and means of bring the life of the 10th to an end in about two years if three years. The whole fiasco is just too much. Kenyans can longer cope with leaders that are like Americans who make minor things major things, and major things are regarded as not important. The 10th house should have realized by now that the Kenyan Youth have more at stake than them, and are soon coming home roost. Recently, a motion that could pave way for debate on the formation of Grand Opposition was passed.
It not surprising to see people like Hon William Ruto take an independent look into the evolving scenario like the recent intra-party schism that deepened when a key Raila ally, Hon. William Ruto, the Eldoret North MP and Agriculture minister, supported the formation of a Grand Opposition, arguing that a system of checks and balances was necessary (http://www.eastandard.net/news). It will be fascinating to see how the votes for the bill on Grand Coalition opposition will be cast.
