The government has called for Kenyan police to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of a New Zealand photographer in Kenya.
33 year old Trent Keegan was found dead yesterday, in a drainage trench in the capital city, Nairobi.
Friends and family of the New Zealand-born photo-journalist killed in Kenya say he was a brave and adventurous man who died doing what he loved.
He had several wounds to his head.
Keegan was born in New Zealand but had been living in Ireland for the past seven years.
He returned home earlier this year to visit his family who are devastated to hear of his death.
Trent Keegan spent his career giving a face to poverty in some of the world’s most desperate places.
His father says he spoke to his son just last week and cannot believe he is gone.
New Zealand police this morning confirmed to his family that the body was that of their son.
Kenyan police initially identified him as an Irish national because of his Irish driver's licence.
Keegan had been based in Ireland but freelanced everywhere from New Orleans to Darfur. He went to Africa two months ago.
Friend and colleague Kim Haughton says he had an adventurous spirit. “All Trent wanted to do was travel around the world and cover conflict, and cover humanitarian issues and cover things like that, that's what he wanted to do.”
But Haughton says New Zealand remained close to his heart. “When he came to a dinner party or something like that, he would always bring New Zealand wine so he remembered the home country that way.”
Keegan's London-based sister hopes to fly to Nairobi to bring his body back to New Zealand.
Police are expecting post-mortem results in the next couple of days.
The New Zealand ministry of foreign affairs is investigating.
