It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Gerald Akumu Mumma which occurred on 8/27/09 at Kenyatta National Hospital (Private Wing) in Nairobi Kenya, after a short illness.
Dr.Mumma lived among us while working with Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia as a Public Health Economist before he relocated to Kenya in February 2007 to teach at Nairobi University,
Credited with opening doors for many Kenyans to work at CDC, Gerald touched lives in many different ways. He participated in almost every event, you can name.
The news has hit his former workmates at CDC with shock. When KEN reached out to Dr. Wangeci Gatei who is still working there, she was out of words. "I just emailed him two days ago, i can not believe what I am hearing."
Dr. Mumma earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 2000 from Mississippi State University, Mississippi, where he worked under Dr. Albert J. Allen. After graduating, he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a post-doctoral fellow in the CDC Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness Fellowship. Dr. Mumma was assigned to the Food, borne, and Diarrheal Diseases Branch of the National Center for Infectious Diseases. He worked on research and projects dealing with food and water safety economics and served as the branch's in-house consultant.
His study on the impact of regulations and programs to improve the safety of eggs and reduce the number of eggs contaminated with salmonella, directly influenced the U.S. Federal Government to change the regulations regarding the handling and food-safety inspections of eggs destined for the supermarkets passed by congress earlier this year.
Dr. Mumma has served as a CDC consultant to the World Health organization (WHO) on the economics of Buruli Ulcer disease, on the economics of Public Health Laboratory Networks, and with CARE-Kenya on the economics of the Safe Water System (SWS). He has left an impressive legacy in the field of health economics.
He went on to lead the Prevention Effectiveness and Health Economics Branch and the CDC Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness Fellowship. Dr. Mumma was a much beloved mentor of the Prevention Effectiveness fellows. He always had a lot of empathy for them, and they always appreciated the care and concern that he showed them. He was always a favorite instructor, able to explain difficult economic concepts to public health officials in terms that they could understand.
Dr. Mumma was a pillar to many and will be missed. RIP.
